I tested Bakelite game: Can you guess "Yes or No"

The other night I was researching ways to test Bakelite. I ran across an article on The spruceCrafts  that mentioned using the commercial cleaner "409" to determine whether an item is truly Bakelite. This is supposed to be a new and better method than the formerly-used cleaner, "Scrubbing Bubbles." If the Q-tip renders a pale yellow color, the item is supposedly Bake-lite.

While there are other methods for testing Bakelite, this seemed the simplest to me, so I bought some 409 for $2.99 at the grocery store.

So, let's see if you can guess how the tests turned out! I thought i really had an eye for Bake-lite because of my childhood in my parents' antique shoppe, but I must say I got schooled.

So, what about these black hoops I got at the Goodwill Sunday. They truly looked vintage in the case, and they were the first item I requested to see. Well, silly me~ NO~

This little peach bangle has a marbelized look, but I truly thought it was Bake-lite. It doesn't fit over my hand, or I would wear it. But, I won't be selling it as Bake-lite because it is NOT! However, look for it in a lot of bracelets in an upcoming auction or pop-up sale,

What about this big bangle? It doesn't photograph well because its shine doesn't show. Anyway, not only did the Q-tip not show pale yellow, it was heavily-covered with the red color.  I suppose it might still be Bakelite underneath, but I have already made a spot where I swabbed. I am going with NO. I think it is Lucite.

These ivory-looking earrings will surely test positive for Bake-lite, right? I love the look of these, although I rarely wear earrings with backs. I wish they were clips or clip-style pierced.
Bakelite?
.....................................NO!!!

So ....I tested on more item not pictured above.

Finally, we get something that tests positive for Bake-lite!  There was pale yellow on the Q-tip.

So, I will be testing more items, but carefully as not to ruin them.  There is really not a place on a bangle that is not noticeable. If you have want to know more about testing costume jewelry materials, Texas Gal Treasures has a great video.
