An embarrassing moment in the Dollar General
This is one of those experiences that is only funny after the fact. We came out to the car and couldn't stop laughing! But, the temperature in the car was not too chill before we went in......
It All started with those dumb coupons on your Dollar General receipt. You may have seen them or used them. $5 off $25 or occasionally $10 off $40, good only one Saturday. Dollar General is the only store remotely close to us. ( Hum the Cheers song..."where everybody knows your name.")
Ken needed something for his grill-out tonight and he had a $5 off coupon. He asked if I wanted to go, but we had already gotten groceries. But, as I perused the digital coupons and saw a $10 off $40. Oh, boy!! So, I hatched a plan that I would buy $40.00 worth of food for meals and a few side items to accompany the meat in our chest freezer for only $30.
This was a brilliant, money saving idea, and I was jumping at the bit to put it into motion. Going down the country road to DG, as we call it, I Was explaining it to ken. Then , he blew in a big tsunami on my parade! He had a list of things he needed besides hot dog buns for polish sausages. Topping the list was his dumb old deodorant for 7.75! That totally goofed up my meal plans for $40 for $30!!!
My understanding was I was covering today's purchases, so I was not a happy camper, reminding him my deodorant was only $2.00. He reminded me there were two in his $7.75 package. I reminded him he was messing up my whole plan. Then there was silence...the kind of silence people who have been married 44 years have. The , " Let's shut up before I strangle you" silence. You may recognize it?
We silently entered the store, each grabbing a bright green buggy. I headed to health and beauty with a vengeance, grabbing the Old Spice off the shelf along with my $2 Suave. I steered my cart back to groceries and started picking up a few grocery items. I realized I couldn't calculate my forty without knowing how much he had already added to the buggy. So, I wandered the store looking for him, back and forth, aggravated even more. Then, here comes my husband, with whom I was very angry, at that moment with a buggy full of junk!
The Great Communicator hadn't yet told me he was paying for that stuff. He took the things out of my buggy, put them into his, and turned up the deodorant aisle. He studied the shelf and took another of my deodorants off the shelf, making my two deodorants $4.00. This made me furious, assuming he was trying to make some stupid point. I got my stuff out of his buggy and said I was putting it back. I politely (or not...can't recall) told him he could just eat that deodorant. And, I flew off to groceries, making a point by putting my few food items back.
If you know us, none of this shocks you. We bicker and carry on quite a bit. All the old familiar employees who know us well were all off today, apparently. But, the managers who have known us well for years would have doubled over laughing. But, during this little square dance in the deodorant aisle, a very young female employee came by, acting like she was coming down that aisle but changed her mind. I am not sure what she heard.
After I put my stuff back, here comes my husband and he tells me to do my "forty thing" and he would do five off $25 with his. So, I started all over perusing and planning and totalling in my head. I was looking for the cheapest chips at the front of the store when the sweet little young lady tip-toes quietly over to check on me. "Do you need some help?" I explained I was trying to compile my forty, babbling on in my usual way. The look on her face told me everything. I then realized .........
She was doing a welfare check!!!!!!
She either thought we had a domestic situation, a mental situation or a hunger situation. Oh, my! I was horrified.
Leaving seemed like a good idea at this point, and we went up front. The express line Guy called for a cashier to open. Ken insisted we had to go there.
Insert eye roll here
Guess who it was. It was so awkward, and there was a mistake we had to wait for a manager to fix. The $10 coupon didn't work!!!
Ugh......
I have repented for my behavior because I (may or may not) have said something bad........
But we have laughed ourselves silly.
